For one of the companies involved, I would guess it was major management f*ck ups and politics that was the problem.

I know it wasn't their engineers, they are the best in the world.

Watson,

The original 604 microarchitecture, which is the basis for all the later PowerPC's, was built on the fundamental principle of a short pipeline and high IPC. This is the same philosophy that killed Cyrix.

Their counterparts at DEC figured out the right way to design microprocessors (deep pipeline) and the smart folks at AMD and Intel picked up on it later.

It takes about 5 seconds worth of analysis to figure out that the G4 pipe is much too short to scale to high frequency. What on earth are they thinking of?
