Xerox has to sell the farm

NEW YORK

In an extraordinary confession of weakness, Xerox Corp chief executive officer Paul Allaire told investors yesterday that the company had an "unsustainable business model", and would sell assets to improve its balance sheet.

Mr Allaire declined to be specific, but analysts said likely sale candidates included Xerox's vast financing operations; its 50 per cent interest in Fuji Xerox; and Xerox's low-end inkjet and copier business.

Although a sale of all of these assets is not thought to be likely, these three pieces of the company alone are thought to be worth $US5-8 billion ($A9.3-15 billion) - a sizeable figure considering that the company's stockmarket valuation is $US8 billion.
