FUD --> "CPUs for PCs will become a low-margin commodity, like Micron's business".

I wonder where did I hear that before? When I see Intel margins dropped by 10% I will believe that. Not to mention, when INTC margins are dropped EVERYONES margins WILL drop. Including AMAT. Another FUD to think about <vbg>

Because it's not clear to me.

I agree with you wholeheartedly and would add that migrations to new tech will take longer than anticipated by the most bullish investors. Watching star trek while in college I was convinced that space travel would exist by the turn of the century. Wrong! All those wired homes and appliances are not 10 years off.
At current valuations some of the boxmakers appear attractive and as in the wintel case adaptive to coming changes. Will intel and microsoft become GE or GM? That is the essence of the question. The good news for both is that they know whats at stake.
