On the need for bandwidth...

I once downloaded a network monitor program with a 30 day free trial (called, I think net.medic) and running it, discovered that once I got my cable modem, almost all
delay was due to the servers, not the network.

The only exeception was when I tried a simultaneous ftp download of a new version of Netscape, a updated virus data file, and several web pages at one time- just to see what would happen. Then there appeared to be some sort of throttling of my access to 1.5 Mpbs for the minuets it took to download.

I conclude that unless you are doing real-time voice/video over the web, 56 is almost ok, but cable modem or DSL is more than ok: the servers can't keep up with your
access.
