One problem is that we have demonized welfare so much that many poor people are unwilling to apply for it (i.e. Medicaid). I know people to suffer rather than beg. That's okay, of course, but people who refuse to obtain free medical assistance for their children because it is welfare are too damned proud IMO. Some people in my family have this attitude. Fortunately, they are not too proud to accept aid from me.
