NTAP--Amdahl Strengthens Alliance With NetApp, Adds Latest Filer to Range of Network Storage Solutions Company Brings Three Decades of Enterprise Experience to Deployment and Customer Support of Network-Attached Storage Solutions SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 3, 2000-- Amdahl Corporation today announced that it would resell the new Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP - news) hardware and software products that deliver network-attached storage solutions to simplify data management and improve performance and availability across networks.
Network-attached storage is one of the fastest growing segments of information technology, providing plug-and-play storage capacity to large corporate enterprises. NetApp® F840 and F840c filers attach to mixed UNIX® and Windows NT® server networks and provide centralized access to data while improving data access performance and overall storage management.
Amdahl, an expert in delivering information technology products and solutions for the global marketplace, and NetApp, the leader in providing network-attached storage (NAS) and management solutions, established a strategic reseller agreement in October 1999 to expand the worldwide deployment of network storage. The companies target the growing corporate enterprise and commercial data center marketplace.
``The continuing alliance between Amdahl and NetApp is in response to the marketplace requirement for cost-effective management of growing online data,'' said Richard McCormack, vice president of Storage Marketing at Amdahl. ``The new F840 series is an exciting opportunity for Amdahl and Network Appliance to deliver NAS solutions to customers who need to manage more data and to transport it within a network.''
``It has dawned on large enterprises just how mission-critical network-attached storage is to their success. Forward thinking vendors are introducing and delivering innovative and powerful NAS architected solutions to the market,'' said Michael Karp, director of Storage Management Services at the Hurwitz Group.
The NetApp F840 series delivers enterprise class capacity, availability and reliability and allows customers to perform true data sharing between UNIX and Windows NT platforms. Other advanced product features of Network Appliance(TM) F840 series filers include SnapShot(TM), SnapMirror(TM), and SnapRestore(TM) which provide high availability, innovative backup, and disaster-recovery protection for today's large commercial enterprises.
Advanced technology
The NetApp F840c and F840 filers serve data with the following advanced technology and design:
F840c Clustered Enterprise Filer
Individual building block capacity to 12 terabytes1 (1)/8X increase Active/active clustering and integrated failover Maximized data availability for mission-critical environments 3.4X throughput performance increase to more than 25,900 SFS ops/sec at less than 1.6 ms overall response time (50% improvement) 3.9X NetBench throughput performance increase to more than 987 Mbits/sec F840 Enterprise Filer
Individual building block capacity to 6 terabytes2 (2)/4X increase Greater than 99.99% data availability 2X throughput performance increase to more than 15,200 SFS ops/sec at less than 1.6ms overall response time (50% improvement) 2X NetBench throughput performance increase to more than 503 Mbits/sec Service, Support, and ROI
Amdahl Services Organization, with three decades of experience in the deployment and integration of mission-critical systems, will provide infrastructure services individually tailored to customers who purchase Network Appliance products from Amdahl. Together, Amdahl and NetApp can offer quality components and smooth deployment while reducing risk and lowering total cost of ownership.
A NetApp filer will be displayed in Amdahl booths at several key tradeshows during the next few months, including Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco, October 2-5; and Gartner ITxpo2000 in Orlando, Florida, October 16-20.
