OT: Gore and Bush aren't discussing real solutions because the voting public wouldn't understand them. There are a lot of adults in this country who can't even read very well, and the candidates are trying to reach them. Their speeches are oriented to the "lowest common denominator" and it is indeed low. As an example, the average newspaper article is written for an eigth grade education level. That's not bad because it means most people will comprehend it, but it may lose something in the simplification process.

<<Most of the oil is gone. There are immense amounts of coal and oil shale.>>

And natural gas, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Lest we forget, automobiles run quite well on natgas derivatives, using current proven technology. 400,000+ of them in Argentina. Maybe their speed limits are lower <g>. Does the U.S. still grant income tax credits for conversions?

The Anadarko Basin, for example, has 40,000 feet of sediment (possibly deepest in US). Less than half of that depth has been developed.

Quite naive of me to hold out hope that much of our nation's wasteful demand could ever come into question here. That, as I see it, is the real trap.

I agree with your recently stated opinions on current US energy policy, Tommaso. Yet I believe that more can be done domestically with the drillbit.
