Well, actually, people are using rechargeable electric lawnmowers right now, and many railroads are powered with electricity. Nuclear power plants make electricity cheaper than any other way, even though the technology has been stalled by panicky anti-nuke obstruction. Except for delivery vans, electric vehicles have not proved practical, but battery techology is improving gradually.

There are numerous ways to substitute electricity for hydrocarbons, and nuclear generation is the most efficient way to make electric power (with all hydropower sourcses long since exploited). That's one reason the Japanese aren't much bothered by the latest rise in oil prices. They make much of their power with nuclera plants and have good electric-powered public transportation.
