No, don't wannabe a historian, couldn't handle the pay cut.

Under your scenario the Korean War should not have followed WWII nor should the Spanish American War have followed the Civil War. In both of those cases the military was at a high rate of readiness. One of the longest periods of peace in the U.S. was between the war of 1812 and the Mexican War when the U.S. military was rather small.
