Chipset Manufacturers' September Revenues Fail to Meet Market Estimates
October 3, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Though the computer sector started to enter its boom season, many chipset manufacturers' September revenues have failed to meet their targets.

The chipset sector's slowdown in September reflects Intel Corp.'s continuing inability to efficiently boost its shipments and the downstream sector's efforts to sell their stored stocks.

Both Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. and Acer Laboratories Inc. announced recently that their September revenue would be lower than in August.

VIA Technologies Inc.'s near monopoly in the market (it holds about 50 percent of the chipset market share at present) is reinforced by the fact that Intel only has the 815E chipset as its main product, and that both SIS and Acer Laboratories have still failed to develop sufficient production capacity to meet market demand.

VIA Technologies predicted that the company's revenue in September will be in the range of NT$3 billion to NT$4 billion. (NT$31.24 = US$1)

VIA Technologies previously estimated that the company will boost shipments from August to October. However, its September revenue tumble revealed that the downstream sectors are still working on digesting their stored chipset stocks in the third quarter.

It will be interesting to see if a similar situation is in store for the wafer foundries of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and United Microelectronics Corp. VIA Technologies believes that chances are high for the company to boost its revenue in the fourth quarter if the storage is successfully digested within a month.

Brian, I agree, but the Market may not because they're looking for excuses.
