Just a theory that allows for a relativist to hold that there is an Absolute Reality that is unaccessible. Same equation, different D for you, me, Greg, X, Rambi. Even canuck-l-head. I miss them...

We could all have different equations, but I think it is LIKELY we all have the same equation. You can change D by using your brain with or without tools to aid you. D is a description of consciousness. But my changing D, I am open to counterchanges in D by you. It's like a tug'o'war. So practically and absolutely you and I have to be a relativists. We have ABSOLUTELY no choice, eh?

If you asked me that question I would answer that nothing is really "right" or "wrong". For me relativism is starting with the notion (the very relative, internal human notion) that all beliefs are simply that- beliefs. There isn't any very good way to prove a belief. So from that aspect they are all fairly equal - and may do very similar things for the people who hold them.

But the way beliefs, held by individuals, affect the people around them is not equal. SOME beliefs require the believer to interfere with people who do not believe in the same beliefs, some beliefs do not do that. I have a preference for beliefs that do not cause harsh interference with others. I prefer beliefs- whatever they are- that promote understanding, and reason. But as a relativist- in my definition of relativism- I have to go back to my beginning statement and say I can't PROVE what I choose to say is my preference is "right" and that what I do not prefer is "wrong".

Does this mean that you hold that when two people hold different ethical views, that both of them are right?

Within our respective frames of reference, yes. I think that's why voodoo and other forms of magic practice "work" for people who believe in it. I can't provide you with another mechanism. It is clearly at odds with how I normally live my life.

When I injured my hand, my mother and her friends conducted a kind of New Age prayer for me (they didn't call it that back then). The neurosurgeon was amazed about the level of recovery I had. Magic? Prayer? Who the heck knows. I'm personally glad, if it worked.
