Quite right. Methanol is also used as a downhole corrosion inhibitor combined with injection valves. I believe that JQ is referring to its effect on cast aluminum parts such as carburetors, which become porous as a result of exposure. This is the main reason that methanol is not the fuel of choice for modern cars, in addition to octane concerns.
