Probably because after hours trading is too thin for the institutions to do enough selling to make it worth while so they hold off until the next day. You also lose normal market-hours stop sell orders, which won't execute after hours unless specified that way, further reducing supply.

Or maybe it's a completely different reason. I'm just guessing.
