I guess the only point I was trying to make is that a Nuke has a unique problem with respect to reactor core power distribution when operated at reduced power.

I agree that most plants suffer a reduction in overall plant efficiency at reduced power. However,sustained ops at reduced power or excessive load swing on a Nuke can actually cause operational problems from a nuclear physics standpoint. This could neccesitate reevaluation of the plant's accident analysis or even premature refueling of the core.

Sorry to be so long winded. I know so little about so much, I felt the need to babble about something I did know about. <vbg>

Gas turbine facilities with multiple units can be turned on and off like individual jet engines in small increments for peaking. best of all, stored hydropower can spin up a generator and lock into sync with the grid any time. But nuclear makes a wonderful base load running at top safe capacity.
