Bob,

In tomorrow's WSJ, the Heard on the Street column will discuss how the prestigious firm Solomon Smith Barney's [formerly known as Slimey Balarney in these parts]renowned communications analyst, Rick Sherlund raised T to a strong buy just prior to T peaking near $60 and also, by a remarkable coincidence, just prior to Slimey Balarney becoming the lead underwriter for the AWE IPO.

No conflict of interest there. But I may be forced to resurrect the term AnalCyst although I've been chastised by Proctologists for insulting actual anal cysts. I've even had Scatologists assure me that no human colon would remain viable if it contained an analyst's head even for a picosecond. <vbg>

It all becomes clear. The Semi Equipment sector does a huge amount of investment banking business. If slimey rates the sector strong buy then it has no bargaining chips to attract the business with. Now that they've established themselves as the official bear, we can expect upgrades out of them when there's substantial investment banking business to be won.

Not before.

FWIW,
Ian.

What exactly is the difference between shipments and units? Do the year over year percentages really indicate a slow down? Seems like sequential figures would make more sense.
