yep, we're a far cry from the heady days of the Boston tea party...

i wouldn't be surprised if 20 years from now the entire West had morphed into some sort of corporate police state...that may sound unduly pessimistic, but i'm constantly amazed at a) the inexorable trend toward faceless mediocrity in politics and b) the acquiescence of the populace, regardless of age segment, when it comes to the state becoming more intrusive and overbearing.

at the same time, the legislative and technological groundwork is laid that would allow a sufficiently dedicated evil personage to establish something less than desirable out of the ashes of e.g. a really bad economic crisis. i personally think that everybody should make a stand for personal freedom at every available opportunity...i acknowledge that the time is probably not right yet for complete anarchy (meaning NO GOVERNMENT AT ALL), but that should be the ultimate long term goal we should all strive for...a society in which anarchy is actually viable.

<I have enormous respect for their early years as a society, but I now think it impossible anymore for that system to both nurture a true leader and allow him/her to attain the highest office.>

Oh, but Allan... just another part of the cycle! Leaders now mirror the stock market, all air, little substance. You'll be amazed at the morphing of American society when the era of 'tought love' is ushered in by the BK of 200?. Just like the market, when the chart is bottoming a decade from now, you'll be surprised by the next crop of great leaders rallying ahead of the index's! THATS the beauty of a democracy.
