-Subscription was 79,00 and now 49,00 DM monthly
-Installation fee 100,00 DM (once)
-Charging for DSL Modem 12,00 DM monthly

elmatador- This ends up being substantially less than USA charges for DSL. Your friend from Munich is paying:

$45 one-time installation fee
$22/month subscription
$5/month DSL modem rental

I'm assuming the $22/month is the ISP charges and the $5/month is what Jochen referenced as DSL monthly sir charge. And I'm guessing his local line costs is probably an additional $12/month. Everyone in the US has a local line, as most likely in Germany. So this is not really an added charge. I won't add the local line charge in while doing apples to apples comparisons.

So a US DSL subscriber pays about $70/month($50+$20)today. But I see where it's rapidly approaching $60/month.

And it appears both your friend in Munich, and Jochen are paying an average of about $30/month for DSL service.

I'm very impressed at these figures. If I'm doing an apples to apples comparison, it appears Germany's DSL broadband charges are substantially half those charged in the USA.

Now I'm wondering how high the penetration rate is for consumer PCs in Germany? And how many homes are able to get DSL access? Seems to me if PC rate is high, then it's almost certain there will be a great deal of consumers electing to take DSL service. -MikeM(From Florida)
