Samsung slams W-CDMA
royalties
RDSL

03 October 2000

Handset manufacturer Samsung Electronics believes that W-CDMA
royalties may be around three-fold more than those it presently pays to
Qualcomm for IS-95, if the three planned consortia choose W-CDMA.

According to Samsung, vendors will be required to pay a minimum
10-18% royalties to around 30 European companies if the three
consortia choose the technology. According to the Electronic Telecom
Research Institute (ETRI), a body owned by the South Korean govt,
operators would have to pay Won840 billion - 1.6 trillion in royalties in
2002-2005 if CDMA2000 was adopted, increasing to Won 2 trillion for
W-CDMA. Motorola and Lucent are demanding their own royalties for
IS95-based units.
