my take is w-cdma is not as good from qcom's standpoint as cdma-2000. It's not the royalties, its the chip business. so a delay to get w-cdma rolling is not good.

Ben,

<< Korea believes it can postpone IMT-2000 for "a few years". This, to me, is the surprise in the news release. What does this say? Presumably SK knows NTT's internal projections? >>

What it says to me is that the delay will "allow the local equipment makers to develop the necessary hardware as all operators" (as stated in the Korea Herald article), and hardware in this case will be UMTS/UTRA, if in fact all 3 carriers remain firm in their resolve (and are allowed) to adopt WCDMA in new spectrum.

I remain hopeful that at least one of the 3 Korean operators will opt for a cdma2000 solution for 2GHz spectrum. I think that if that is the case, it is going to require the completion of standardization for 3xMC.

Regardless, I expect that each of the operators will pursue the complete near term upgrade path from IS-95C through 1xEV-DO and 1xEV-DV in existing 900 MHZz & 1700 MHz spectrum.

... but as they say, it ain't over, till it's over (as it relates to 2GHz spectrum).
