Sierra Pacific tries again:

CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Luminous Networks, Inc., the industry's first provider of carrier class Gigabit IP over Fiber optical access switches, today announced that Sierra Pacific Communications has successfully completed a beta test implementation of the Luminous Networks' PacketWave(TM) product. Sierra Pacific Communications, formed to provide telecommunications services to several growing western state markets, is looking to use the PacketWave to extend its services to metropolitan area markets in that region.

``Sierra Pacific Communications represents a growing market of utility company subsidiary ventures that Luminous Networks is positioned to serve with our technology,'' said Alex Naqvi, president and CEO of Luminous Networks. ``Many utility companies around the country are entering the telecommunications business to take advantage of the new competitive environment for these services while leveraging their understanding of customer needs in their home markets. Sierra Pacific is a leader in this area and will use the technical advantages of new equipment like our PacketWave technology to build a fast and scalable metropolitan access network infrastructure to complement their fiber optic backbone initiative.''

``Our goal is to provide an alternative path for high-speed communications, at a highly competitive rate, in one of America's fastest growing markets,'' said Pete Caron, director, business development for Sierra Pacific Communications. ``We're excited about Luminous Networks' PacketWave technology because it allows us to rapidly deploy ''virtual leased lines`` in a survivable packet ring, providing unique Ethernet and fractional Ethernet services along with traditional T1 services with the dependability
our customers demand. The PacketWave rings have demonstrated sub-50 millisecond survivability on both Ethernet and T1
services. PacketWave also enables us to take advantage of management efficiencies by handling both Ethernet and T1 on a single piece of equipment, while developing the metropolitan area network infrastructure that will scale as our business grows.''

Luminous Networks PacketWave optical access switches enable metropolitan access service providers to offer a rich set of IP and legacy circuit-based services, all on the same network. PacketWave products leverage Gigabit IP over Fiber technology enabling service providers to reliably deliver a wide range of services to their customers at the lowest cost per bit.

PacketWave switches make it possible for telecommunications carriers and service providers to transport large volumes of IP data traffic, along with traditional voice traffic, throughout a metropolitan area network (MAN) at a fraction of the cost of existing circuit-switched technologies. PacketWave supports both Ethernet (including fractional Ethernet) and T1 (synchronous, toll-quality, BellCore compliant) in the same unit.

PacketWave switches fit right into the MAN access ring architecture, providing a forward-looking technology with the capacity to handle rapidly- increasing data loads and the flexibility to adapt to a variety of applications with varying Class of Service requirements, without sacrificing system reliability or voice quality.
