Of course, on the flipside, the Hammer won't be able to handle 64-bit instructions nearly as well as the Itanium.

What on earth is that supposed to mean? That it might get some of them wrong? Maybe drop a few on the floor in its mishandling?

I assume they are talking about execution speed. Well, the Itanic is just too complex a design to be clocked as fast as a Sledge. The three-instructions per clock starts to look a bit pokey when it can't hit 800MHz.

Particularly when you realize that, unless the app is designed very carefully, only one of the three instructions is current and the other two are marked as obsolete. Then you realize the performance problems of having all your instructions needing 128 bits of cache space regardless of the instruction complexity. My guess is an 800MHz Itanic will not be able to compete with a 1.5GHz Sledge.

I think Sledge will turn out to be a lean and mean 64 bit workhorse. IA32 did not do so badly despite predictions of its demise at the hands of the RISC competitors. Do not underestimate the power of backward-compatibility.

Enough ranting. I just hate the Itanic :^)

peter:

Great article, probably accurate...Slowly but surely, it seems, AMD's credibility is waxing. More vendors hopping aboard daily, many more positive reviews in the tech journals, a product line evolving at a rapid clip and a growing number of products climbing into many top 10 sales lists!!! Exciting times are upon AMD, methinks!!!
