The Dow is an awkward index. It blends the surviving old industrials with banks, some drugs and retailers, with little representation to the communications sector. Maybe there used to be times when it mirrored the US economy, but I think those times were when US Steel was still a member. The Dollar weight of the Dow gives almost equal weight to market shakers like INTC and old economy big employers relatively small market caps like EK, IP and CAT.
I prefer to look at the Naz and NYSE rather then the NDX and the Dow. I agree that the Dow is still one of the strongest groups of brand names around (Coke, Kodak, Dupont, 3M etc.) but it sure isn't a good representation of the market, even with the inclusion of INTC and MSFT.
All I wanted to say is I don't feel comfortable with this index but if it works for you then fine, go ahead and make some money.
