Douglas Wilson clearly is saying that you can't build a computer from transistors. The computer you sit in front of is "only" transistors. But what does that mean? The meaning comes from the arrangement of the transistors and the software that sits on top of that. Software is experience and knowledge. The "baby" in an abortion has the neurological development of a shrimp! It has no software. Its hardware is incomplete. Now I don't eat shrimp, but I feel better about that than I do eating cows. Or monkey. Or apes. Or people. My notion of suffering follows a similar gradient.

I also think that one can be an atheist and moral. Those aren't mutually exclusive but I'm sure you could find a dozen people who would swear it is in your church. They would argue that your first duty is to God. I believe your first duty is to your fellow man. You are here on Earth and not Heaven. Earth is populated with people. When I'm in Heaven I'll be glad to serve Him. Duty fits into your personal sense of responsibility here and now. If you aren't here to learn about compassion, then why are we? To only serve God? To learn chapter and verse of the Bible and add nothing of your own? I doubt that is true and there is incredibly little evidence for it. Compassion to me is a more compelling value than simple belief. It can be practiced by anyone, irrespective of their faith, or belief or non-belief in a God. In that sense, it is universal.
