Nasdaq Surges as Oracle Revives

New York, Oct 04, 2000 (123Jump via COMTEX) -- By the end of the day, the
Nasdaq showed a gain of 66.95 points to 3522.78, revived by Oracle Corp.'s
(NASDAQ: ORCL) ongoing battle. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained
64.74 points to 10784.48. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index also moved up - by
8.31 points to 1434.77.

New to the stock market, Oplink Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: OPLK), a
fiber-optics components manufacturer, saw its share price double after its debut
on the Nasdaq, making it one of the most actively traded stocks today. The
outlook remains favorable in this sector as competitors Avici Systems
(NASDAQ: AVCI) and New Focus (NASDAQ: NUFO) are trading above their recent IPO
price and have gained 2.3% and 2.81% respectively today. The company has an
impressive customer base, which includes Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU),
Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) and JDS Uniphase Corp. (NASDAQ: JDSU). Cisco and
JDS stocks have also increased through some animated trading today.

Primus Telecommunications Group Inc. (NASDAQ: PRTL), a global Internet, data and
voice service provider, revealed today that Cisco Series 12000 Internet routers
had been selected for its next-generation global broadband data network. As
mentioned, Cisco shares have been actively trading and nudging up today. Primus
also gained 4.06% during the day.

Cisco was also in the headlines as EMC Corp. (NYSE:EMC), Oracle and Cisco
announced a major expansion of their ECOstructure Initiative. The ECOstructure
alliance is dedicated to ongoing testing and validation of e-business solutions.
Two new integration centers are planned as part of this expansion. After some
heavy trading, EMC shows a 1.13% decline this afternoon to $92.94, up from the
day's low of $85.75 - Oracle finished the day with a drop of 2.16% to $68.

In their ongoing saga, EMI Group Plc and Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:TWX), a leading
media and entertainment company, have failed to formally appease the European
Commission, increasing the risk of receiving a veto for their $20 billion music
venture. The companies failed to follow through on the sale of Virgin Records
and of Chappell Music catalog today. Time Warner shares have reacted favorably
and are up 4.63% to $84.76.

Siemens Automation and Drives Systems and Engineering, an operating unit of
Siemens AG (U:SMAWY) announced today that it installed an Oracle Internet file
system to consolidate extensive data, which was previously stored using
Microsoft Corp.'s (NASDAQ: MSFT) NT file servers.

Meanwhile, E.piphany Inc. (NASDAQ: EPNY), a software developer, saw its shares
rise sharply $8.75 to $62 this afternoon as it disclosed an alliance with Sun
Microsystems. Financial details of the transaction were not shared. Both
companies will combine their engineering, sales and marketing plans to support
this alliance.

In similar news, i2 Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: ITWO), a global provider of
intelligent e-business solutions, has entered an agreement with Sun Microsystems
Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW), a major networking solutions provider, to provide extended
e-business Strategic Opportunity Assessment (eSOA) services. Sun Microsystems'
shares have been up all day, and showed a 3.14% gain to $111.78 this afternoon.

BMC Software Inc. (NASDAQ: BMCS) issued a profit warning for its fiscal
second-quarter results, saying that earnings would fall short of expectations.
Share prices have dropped by $1 to $16.63.

Finnish company Wicom Communications announced plans for expansion in Europe and
in the US by year-end. The company specializes in Voice over Internet Protocol
(VoIP) business software, an area enjoying a major boost this week. On Monday,
Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE:NT), a telecommunications equipment developer, was
awarded a contract to upgrade Cable & Wireless PLC's (NYSE:CW) phone network
with VoIP.

Intelligent Compression Technologies Inc., announced today that Nortel Networks
had completed a minority investment of $5 million through a licensing agreement
to use their file-specific compression technology.
