Ever since the burning bush, Moses and God have become buddy, buddy, and talk face to face all the time, and share. They talk about this and about that; They discuss About how the war is going, or God recounts the wrestling match with Jacon, when Jacob looked upon God's face and upon His body.

Moses becomes so close to God that he asks Him to see his quintessential body. Clearly, making bodies is nothing for God, but Moses wants his best friend to, "Shew me thy Glory". Moses is curious, and he wants to feel closer to his best friend. God feels very special around Moses. He spends a lot of his time, just chewin the fat with him. He agrees to let Moses see His Glory...His body as it actually is--but He tells Moses that Moses cannot see His actual face and live. Now, it seems clear enough that God would not bother to tell Moses that he could not see his face and live...if He didn't have a face!

We are not told why this is, but that it is of the utmost importance, and not an invention, we may judge by the elaborate precautions God takes to protect his best friend from injury.

God decides to place Moses in a fissure of the rock. Presumably, he wedges him in so that Moses may not willfully sneak a glance at God and thus die. This happened before with God with one of His beloved...the innocent but too too curious desert lady. God does not want to make this kind of mistake again.

God tells Moses that He is going to cover his eyes for his own protection, but once the front of God has passed, God removes his hand so that Moses can see His back parts. The bible does not say whether or not this was the pleasing and fulfilling experience that Moses had hoped it would be.

This is an intimate passage in the bible. It is a tender testimony to friendship, loyalty, and caring. God takes extreme precautions in order that Moses's heart-felt request may be fulfilled. It is as clear as John seeing Jesus standing at the right hand of God: not by himself, not at his left shoulder...but at his right hand.

Moses saw the actual body and Glory of God, but he was never allowed to see God's actual face. The context makes it clear that where people in the bible did see God's face, and lived...God was appearing as an avatar.

33:18

And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.

33:19

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

33:20

And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

33:21

And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:

33:22

And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

33:23

And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen
