There is a wonderful book called The Wisdom of Bones (wonderful in that it is written with clarity and wit for the layperson) that goes into detail about the development of speech in humans using studies on ther Nariokotomi Boy, a 1.5 million year old skeleton found in Kenya in the 80s. It is far too complex to discuss in a post, or for me to remember without rereading, but the conclusion reached by Dr. Alan Walker with the assistance of many experts in many fields, was that this very human person was physically incapable of speech. The implications are vast.
