Patricia: If the Republicans were to assume control of the presidency and both houses of Congress, I think we'd see the right wing of the Republican Party try to exert its influence pronto. Hastert would be challenged by a far-right candidate for House speaker, and so on. As a precedent, remember that the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress during the Carter presidency, and those four years were marked by strife between the White House and congressional leaders. In a weird way I'd almost welcome two years of an all-GOP rule ... just to see whether the Repubs would be capable of actually doing something ... as opposed to what we've seen from the "do-nothing" Republican Congress of '94-'00.
