"MU blew away numbers today. I suspect that that will at least temporarily erase the hogwash that the chip sector has peaked. From a trading perspective"

MU is more a product of spot DRAM pricing than semi demand. This is why MU is ALWAYS a surprise - up OR down. Do yourself a favor and don't bet your lunch money on semis based on MU.

MU earnings are looking back, not forward.
If there is a significant slowdown in computer sales, as indicated by DELL, INTC and AAPL, it means that DRAM prices will be falling, unit sales falling and earnings trend reversing.

Also don't forget all new capacity coming online in the next 12 month. This combined with slower demand may absolutely devastate DRAM prices.

Therefore in the grand scheme of things MU earnings are meaningless. Box makers warnings are more important.

TP, MU earnings are for the summer season not forward looking. LXK just announced flat sales and earnings for next year.

Chip sector is highly cyclical and does not deserve the present P/E. They should trade like other high tech cyclical companies. For one DD and HON come to mind.
