Re: HP will OEM and sell NEC's 16-way server based on Intel's Itanium processor.

i.e. HP has elected to pass on the current generation of Itanic. They'll offer NEC's product if anyone insists on buying one.

Maybe HP will decide McKinley is good enough to justify building a system with it.

NEC to Supply High-End IA-64 Server to Hewlett-Packard Hewlett-Packard to provide the enterprise HP-UX operating system to NEC

Well I read through the article a couple of times to find something tangible that I could comment on. There is nothing to it. It is pure marketingspeak. Let me translate.

This server, code named AzusA
It doesnt have a real name yet.

will become a part of the HP9000 enterprise server family
It is not mature enough to be in the family.

NEC and HP will collaborate on enhancing features of HP-UX on AzuzA
We haven't actually started the port yet.

specifically in the areas of performance optimization and diagnostics
Yes, Itanium is slow and crashes a lot, but we can fix that.

AsusA will provide scalability superior to any other Itanium server
Can't really challenge that until "any other Itanium server" makes an appearance can we?

NEC's IA-64 servers have superior performance and are competitively priced
Not hard to claim when there is no competition and you haven't produced any benchmarks or pricing information.

NEC's strategy is to focus on the development of servers based on Intel's Itanium family of processors as it considers IA-64 to be the mainstream processor for open server platforms in the future.
Mental note - steer well clear of NEC stock.

HP excels in its mission critical UNIX and IA-64 architecture technologies
If you don't have an excellent product, claim you have excellent "architecture technologies".

With NEC's server technology and HP's UNIX/IA-64 technology, both companies can now drive further the IA-64 strategy to expand the HP-UX leadership in the forthcoming IA-64 UNIX market
Mental note - steer well clear of HP stock.
