AMD vs Intel is the classic David & Goliath story.

AMD currently makes a great processor and everyone
thinks they have outdone Intel. What most fail to
realize is that AMD is basically a one trick pony
compared to Intel. They just don't have the
engineering resources to offer the breadth of
products to serve all the market segments Intel
does.

True, AMD picked the most profitable segment to
attack as they should have. But everyone is
criticizing Intel for stumbling and praising AMD
for having their act together. AMD is juggling
one ball, Intel is juggling 20.

It's much easier to execute when your focus is
narrow. When AMD starts to branch out and
has to develop multiple processors and chipsets to
serve the many markets that keep popping up, they
will have a much greater opportunity to experience
design problems, product delays and the occasional
'bad idea'.
