bill, i'm not disputing the sleazy nature of a market maker... especially, on thinly traded stocks where there are only a few market makers. however, in today's day and age, most of the sleaze results in a 1/8 or 1/4 point. unless you're talking penny stocks, the current system simply does not lend itself to the type of manipulation people are discussing on these threads.... think about it... there are about a dozen market makers on MRVC. if someone yanks the bid higher or lower, another market maker steps into their place. yes, one corruption is deeply disturbing--large firms that use ONLY their own market makers or hold trades to make a 1/4 point... more than just occasionally, investors get screwed in that scenario. just ask Schwab.
