The Sony 300 mm wafer plant sounds like it's for LCD and CCD production. These are apparently for Sony's display division, for which they're famous. In case you're wondering, the LSI in the sentence below, and in other places in the article, means large scale integration, just a coincidence with LSI Logic's company name.

Sony Corp. has drawn up a different plan for its new 300mm wafer plant than LSI makers, with a sharp focus on LCDs.

The sentence below answers your question anyway:

Q: Is your company planning to manufacture ordinary MOS-LSI chips, other than LCDs or CCDs?

A: Nothing is planned yet. But I am positive that if there's a plan on MOS-LSI production at the new plant in the future, we will be able to make the most of our LCD/CCD manufacturing expertise.

"Ordinary" I take to mean ASICs, or microprocessors, microcontrollers, cell phone chips, etc.

This Sony plan is not an issue for LSI Logic.
