A huge win for MSFT's Office2000, WIn98 in PRC
==
Tengtu International Chairman and CEO Pak K. Cheung said thatdirect billing of the Microsoft MSFT-based software purchaseby the Ministry of Education would generate one of the largest salesin the history of the company. "Much more important," he explained,"tens of thousands of individual school systems could be galvanized bythis act of the Ministry at its highest level to speed up their ownorders for installation of our software products. It is impossible tooverestimate the value of this official endorsement. We believe thatit sends a clear signal to educators that they cannot be criticizedfor buying products that the Ministry itself has tested, foundappropriate and purchased in huge quantities."

In order to expedite its established projects on "Relief toDisadvantaged Regions," "Contemporary Distance Learning" and"Information Technology Education", the PRC Ministry of Education hasselected MS Windows 98 (Chinese edition) and MS Office 2000 (Chineseedition) software, both distributed by Tengtu. Once these desktopoperating and application systems have been installed, along with MSSBS4.5 for the backbone servers, Tengtu will offer its own proprietaryeducational software to the schools.

My first look at servers started by clicking on the cheapest low end model I could find. What do you know, the following was selected under the OS options list.

. No Operating System (LINUX)

----------------

This is exactly how the choice was worded. Sure, the MSFT OS options were quite a bit more money, but you get what you pay for, IMO. I'll start to worry when the MSFT options AREN'T offered for $799.

I'll look at servers next --- Which is where you'll find what we've been talking about but, that got me to thinking: I wonder if the reason the Dell catalog does not make mention of 'PCs' but rather Desktops/Workstations/Servers is an exploit of a contractural loophole in their MS OEM agreement which involves "PCs". You know? -JCJ --- Edit: Maybe that's silly. I'm just noticing the absence of MS OS from the default configuration and the coincidental absense of the letters "PC" in the Dell catalog...

"Dell recommends Windows 2000 Professional for business"

Maybe thats why they are seeing their growth decline!
