Cupertino, Calif., Oct 5, 2000, 16:55 /BSNewswire via HerbVic/ -- Despite denials from an Apple spokesperson, several unnamed sources from inside Dell Computer have leaked information concerning a possible merger between the two companies. When asked about the rumored merger, an Apple spokesperson responded, "There are no announcements pending of a merger with any other company at this time." Michael Dell and Steve Jobs were unavailable for comment. According to James J. Cramer of TheStreet.com the merger would make a lot of sense, business wise. "Dell's growing server business coupled with Apple's consumer and innovation savvy would make a good fit, especially in light of Apple's soon to be released OS X, a Unix based modern operating system. As I understand it, OS X could be readied for release on Intel and compatible processors very quickly. With Dell offering OS X as a server OS option and Apple already making the OS X server consumer friendly, the merger would make the combined company a credible threat to Microsoft's dominance and would also compete strongly with the rest of PC hardware manufacturers. There are other things to consider also. Both companies farm out production and are experts in just-in-time manufacturing. There are many economies of scale advantages that would be accretive to earnings." Both Apple and Dell were hit hard by investors recently due to pre earnings warnings. It is not known at this time if there are any talks going on, or how the merger might take shape, or even which CEO superstar would head the new company. Dell ended the day down $3, or 10.6%, to $25.19; Intel was down $1, or 2.4%, to $41; and Apple was down $1.56, or 6.6%, to $22.06.
