Just returned from 10 days in Philippines. I was in Badian Island (www.badianhotel.com) with wife undergoing instructions for diving certificate. I maintained my normal daily schedule of rising at 6:00am. Spent the days lazing about, reading books, swimming and diving, feeding and generally doing nothing. We have scuba-ed before but never taken the time and effort to get certified. The world under the ocean is different, weightless, peaceful, and wonderful, at least in these warm tropical seas. I was in Badian in 1986. The place is recognizably the same, although there are some improvements (maybe improvements) such as paved roads, telephone, non-generator sourced electricity. Thankfully all else are as they were – no TV, no news. The biggest decision each day is whether one wants to have the seafood or mixed vegetables soup, the mango or banana shake, the grilled squid over plain or garlic rice, and finally, reading the Harry Potter, the Agatha Christie or Dumb Money by Joey Anuff and Gary Wolf. The rest of the 25 bungalows are empty or occupied by 3 couples and one family with two kids, no doubt making the same tough decisions each day. Our dive instructor Tony was from Louisiana and has been in the Philippines since 1984. His eyesight had miraculously and dramatically improved. When his US based doctor asked him what he has been doing, he replied … nothing.

I was going to check the stock market via the hotel's internet, but decided against it as I dug into my Cats Amongst Pigeons by Agatha Christie.

Now work starts again with yet another trip to Hefei.
