Try this and see if it helps.

In Control Panel, double-click Multimedia or Sounds and Multimedia.

On the Audio tab, select the devices you want in the Preferred Device boxes.

Click the Use Preferred Devices Only check box to select it.

Click OK.

Question to you if that doesn't help: Under device tab, do you have audio devices?

edit: In system properties, look at hardware profiles to see if you have more than 1 configuration.

check out items like refresh and view devices by type versus view devices by connection.

Refresh - The Refresh button causes the devices on your computer to be re-enumerated. Enumeration is the act of identifying Plug and Play devices in the computer.
