Gore Blindsided From the Left

Two certified liberals have leveled a blast at Vice President Al Gore, charging that he
has been a lifelong political chameleon who changes his spots almost as often as
he changes his socks.

In their book, "Al Gore: A User’s Manual," authors Alexander Cockburn – a
self-described "old leftist" – and Jeffrey St. Clair, who is called "America’s best
environmental muckraker," follow Gore’s constant reinventing of himself. They cite
such incidents as his tear-stained description of his sister’s death, which he blamed
on tobacco smoking.

"I will pour my heart and soul into the cause of protecting our children from the
dangers of smoking,” he told the Democrat National Convention in 1996.

Despite that pledge he continued to accept government subsidies for his tobacco
allotments in Tennessee and money from the tobacco companies for the next
seven years.

He bragged about his support of the Gulf War, but neglected to admit that, in the
words of Sen. Alan Simpson, he auctioned off his vote to the highest bidder willing
to give him the most TV coverage in announcing his position.

The authors zero in on Gore’s attacks on George W. Bush for being a tool of big oil
while the record shows that Occidental Petroleum has been the bedrock of his own
and his family’s financial fortune.

It would seem that the authors don’t subscribe to the old left-wing adage "No
enemies to the left." Gore comes off as anything but their friend.
