I'll do some digging this weekend on the sound card and the game. You have the software to reinstall for the sound card? That card should be plug and play and should be detected. Are you comfortable opening the case and checking if the card is seated properly? Are you guessing the turning off the sound option (in the game?) caused this problem (it does seem like a cause and effect item).

It also includes some settings for the ini file which deal with sound on this game.
