I am just curious about state income taxes. What kind of percentages are typical. Call it morbid fascination...

Let me give you one example - mine. I live in a high tax place - New York City. My state and local taxes were 9.7% of the federal adjusted gross income.

This figure doesn't include sales taxes or any other state and local taxes of fees imposed by state and local government.
