jamok99,

<Really? Companies that screw-up big time can't maintain their bellweather status (at least for a significant period of time)? >

Yes they can (and that's why one is always better off relying on a second source) but to say that the company intentionally tries to screw-up is ridiculous.

What the_crazy_doug is saying Compaq (and other OEMs who use(d) K6s by implication) do not care about customer problems and that is the reason they picked K6.

Intel/AMD/Compaq/Dell and any other major company out there do "care" about quality, customer support, leadership and all that kind of stuff. But sometimes, sh*t happens.

"Not being able to deliver to customers what one would like to" is one thing and "not caring for them" is an entirely different thing.

Chuck

P.S.: In business it is well acknowledged that a second place company tries harder than the first one in trying to please customer and that is one way in which they try to keep/win business. It is probably safe to say that Dell and AMD fit into that category during most of the 90s. So, I would have no beef with the argument that Dell (or AMD) cares more.
