Applied Materials says DOJ opens inquiry

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct 6 (Reuters) - Applied Materials Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMAT - news) on Friday said the U.S. Department of Justice
has told the company it is looking into the company's technology licensing practices.

Applied Materials, a provider of equipment and services used in the semiconductor industry, said the investigation ``appears to be a routine
inquiry,'' and it believes its technology licensing practices are legal.
