rudedog, AMD cannot supply sufficient processors for Dell or Compaq to make a broad commitment. Compaq is expanding their offering as AMD increases the supply volume. Also via....can they make enough chipsets?
These are the logistic reasons behind why the biggies do nto commit totally. CPQ wanted to sustain AMD, as did IBM. They saw that if Intel crushed AMD then the P-II would still be for sale at $1000 for a 600 mhz parts.
So as part of that they will sustain AMD.
Now AMD finds that the screwdriver shops and small OEM market has taken off, esp in Europe. This market is broad and deep and dwarfs the big three in collective sales, so AMD is content to expand volume into that market instead of trying to get enough to sate dell/CPQ/IBM if they wanted to offer more AMD based systems.

The chipset convergence has done a lot to standardise systems. Most are made to identical schematics, for the most part, as the chipset determines that. This erodes the points Zim has made, but not totally.
