Rambus Cross Licensing

The Micron complaint lets us release just how strong the RMBS patent position is.
Paragraph 40 of the Micron complaint states,
"Through its license agreement, Rambus mandated the pooling of patent technology. Rambus required Micron to provide it with a cross-license on certain Rambus improvements to the Rambus technology, and on certain other Micron patents that the use of current or future generations of Rambus technology would necessarily require.
Upon belief and information, Rambus required all other Synchronous DRAM manufacturers that licensed RDRAM technology to provide Rambus with similar cross-licenses
under their patents."

Heh,heh. Infineon and Micron signed the deal.
Any patents needed, Rambus has the right, and can extend
it to anyone else.
They didn't have to sign. But Rambus looks pretty well
covered.

Doug's on the FOOL replies to the above
Rambus does require an assignable cross license to any improvements made to Rambus IP by the Rambus IP licensees.

Wow, What a deal.

It is very interesting. In effect Rambus is in a position to grant cross licenses for all IP related to Rambus IP to Rambus licensees.

I think I can see some valid reasons for it. Rambus will want to keep some control on just how Rambus memory is produced in the marketplace, otherwise, no standard.

Also, Rambus will want the MMs to use their expertise to continue to improve the implementation of RDRAM and future standards. How better to accomplish that?

Since the MMS already cross license each other, nothing is lost and the market (and Rambus) gains.
