Whether the best approach or not, my accountant just told me to use a zero basis for the spinoff and keep the same basis in the original stock. Makes sense to me from several angles, keeps the math easy and considering my small number of shares probably wont be off more than pennies, if any, compared to the hoops everyone else seems to be jumping through.
