I think you are right on. Some on the thread have compared him to Rush. I think their main source of disavowal is that Matthews is openly critical of Clinton. All real Democrats love Clinton. An editorial in the WSJ
today questioned why so many liberals are enamored of Clinton when he has embraced so many conservative issues
over his tenure. Puzzles me too!

If I'm not mistaken, Matthews worked for Tip O'niell. He definitely has democrat roots.knc
