If economic value and accounting value diverge the latter is almost certainly the higher figure.

I fail to see how. Would not unlocking assumption very often lead to a reduced equity value?

somewhat true for the finance unit but what about insurance operations? While insurance liabilities are of financial kind too the behavior of those is different from traditional fixed income securities.

when I said unlocking I was not referring to anything specific such as marking up/down the traditional holdings. The unlocking may be of deferred costs which may be offset by high surrender charges for example.

having said that I have to repeat that my knowledge of the gaap accounting is very limited.
