October is often a weak month for stock market. I think there are two reasons:
(1) Mutual fund tax-loss selling before the end of October.
(2) During the Jewish high holy days, many traders are not active. In the absence of major players, the market lacks sufficient liquidity.

This year the earnings not meeting expectation adds to the market's October weakness.

I think the market should recover about mid-October. What group will lead the recovery? My guess: the telecom stocks. This sector was sold to the bottom first, probably also first to recover.
