George,

What this article fails to mention is that for this process to work, the oil sand has to be removed from the ground. This means that it must be strip mined. The environmentalist wackos will never allow this in the U.S. And if Al Gore is elected kiss this idea goodbye.

Paul

Nonsense for sure. These promotions pop up in every up cycle<g>

This gem from the dude's pitch about who they'll sell these "franchises" to is enough by itself for a good chuckle, "...and others who are not presently in the oil business".

Translation? People with no experience in the oil biz should be "easy marks" for this scam<G>.

PT Barnum is alive and well every time there's a big bull market in ANY sector. IMHO this is just the usual reminder of what we'll see late in the cycle. Say a couple of years from now, AFTER the W.S. Investment Bankers have finished marketing all the quality O&G IPOs....

George, Diana, Slider, Razor and the motley crew of political activists .....

Altavista returned this for Kenterprice:

More to the point. I talked with a friend of mine last week about oil-shale development. He graduated from University of Alberta around 1968 in Mechanical Engineering. He had been to his High School reunion last summer and mentioned that two of his friends are working at oil-shale companies.
He claimed that they were making money extracting oil with this process. After a not very extensive search I found Synfuels, which is owned by some major players like Alberta Energy, Petro-Canada etc. Does anyone of investment ideas in synfuel area.

I thought that I would also mention another bit of trivia here. Last summer I was talking with a fellow from Greece and he said that he knew one tanker owner. Many of them live on the island of Chios, which is nearly "turist free" he says, this site notwithstanding

chandris.gr

This ship owner apparently sunk a smallish tanker off the coast of Crete and uses it temporarily store oil. Missing barrels!!! LOL.

My comments on the personalities in the political arena.
If you study the body language of the various people, I must say that Richardson gets very high marks. He puts on a serious face to a serious question and delivers his answer calmly. At appropriate times he disarms you with his smile.
Diane, I agree with you that his answers on energy conservation were pathetic. Paula Zhan interviewed him on Fox this morning and his answers were contradictory. Lieberman has a similar style. For these reasons, when poliicians lie, one must know the facts behind the issues
well in order to pick out the lies. Gore has a very strained style and his body language clearly hurts him. Bush at his best gives a forceful image, but after he delivers what he thinks is a strong statement, there is a tinge of a self-satisfied smile that lingers at the edge of his mouth. It is as if he is thinking "boy did I nail that one". Cheney is like a machine gun and and is able disarm the opponent with right phrases, such as "I liked the former Joe than the present one". Ralph Nader is so convinced of his cause that he also delivers his message with force. Actually Buchanan does this well also, but then his face looks so surly that it turns people off.

Did I manage to offend everyone's favorite candidate, LOL. I could now say that "I never vote because they politicians only get encouraged by it". This is a joke that I heard. I will vote, but as an independent, I will not advertise for whom. My reasons for staying independent is that I do not want to become an apologist for either party. Gore Vidal (Al Gore's cousin) was on C-Span the other night and blamed the Clinton-Gore administration for the "Rupublicanization" of the Democratic Party. He has such a caustic outlook obtained by looking at things from a vast historical perspective of Jeffersonian and Hamiltonian views of how the Union developed.

Back to stocks:

Slider, your hat-trick is so far working on shorting NAS.
It has been a fairly orderly slide and I hope that it continues this way, for if it does, it will take the oil sector down with it too fast. I suspect that recent weakness is, however, partly caused by Mutual Fund Investors having gone to cash. I did about a month ago on those funds over which I have little control.

Razor, if you have read this far, what is your take on OWC.
Is it a buy at 75 cents?

Best, Seppo

P.S. A stream-of-conciousness post, Huh....

I saw this article and laughed. So how do you get these "oil sands" to the surface or extract their oil. One way would be to dig a giant open pit that you could see from the moon!!! That sounds really inexpensive and very environmentally friendly. Maybe they have some kind of device a la Jules Verne that will magically suck the sand up a pipe to the surface.

I have noticed a lot of jibberish about the current oil/gas environment. Did anyone notice that Algore has a poor grasp of geography?? During the first Presidential debate he made a reference to seeking reserves in the Gulf of Mexico BUT he specifically referred to the "West Gulf" (of Mexico). I took this to mean that part of the Gulf running along the Mexican coast. U.S. production/exploration is in the Northern Gulf.

Algore and all of these ecoholics need to get together to straighten out their facts. They all sound like a bunch of rejects from Monty Pythons flying circus.

On a more serious note and discussing oil coming from unconventional sources. Southern and Central Pacific are building a multi-billion oil from shale project in North Queensland. Understand that this very long term and technologically complex project is now approaching oil production (with the help of the Canadians. Full commercial (and profitable) production is some years away. I understand that a barrel of oil will be around US$10 to produce. This will be very high grade stuff and should be eagerly sought.
