Mutual funds that focus on specific sectors of the stock market
racked up the biggest gains in the third quarter. Among U.S.
diversified funds, mid-cap core funds took top honors. But
once-mighty S&P 500 Index funds fell further from grace, losing
more than 1% in the quarter, and almost 2% year-to-date.
