Applied Materials reports Justice Department probe
By Bloomberg News
October 6, 2000, 4:25 p.m. PT
Applied
Materials, the world's biggest semiconductor-equipment maker, said the U.S. Justice Department is investigating its technology licensing practices.

Applied recently received notification of the Justice Department probe and has no indication of how long it will take, the company said. The practices in question include the licensing of patents to other companies, said spokesman Jeffrey Lettes.

The Justice Department has requested company documents into a "minuscule" part of Applied's business and is not focusing on its core business of making chip-manufacturing tools, Lettes said.

The company does not expect the investigation to hurt sales or profits, Lettes said.
